Decision of Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte complicates US military interests in the Asia-Pacific region amid growing ambitions of China
US President Donald Trump said he does not object to the decision of Filipino counterpart Rodrigo Duterte to stop many years of military cooperation between the countries, although this position diverges from the opinion of US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper . About this writes Reuters .

Yesterday, the President of the Philippines announced the termination of the 20-year agreement on visits to US troops. He did this because Washington canceled the visa for a former Philippine police chief who led Dutert's bloody drug war.

The head of the Pentagon called the decision "unsuccessful," since the US and allies are forcing China to comply with "international rules" in Asia. But the owner of the White House is not worried.

“I don’t mind if they want to do this. It will save a lot of money,” Trump said and added that he has “very good” relations with Duterte.

Some Filipino senators tried to block the step of their president, arguing that he did not have the right to unilaterally cancel the international pacts that the Senate had ratified. Some friction over VFA is observed with Japan and South Korea.
  • Earlier, Filipino President Duterte was required to  take a drug test  because of an unsuccessful joke.
  • In 2018, he  called God “stupid,” after which the tense situation between the presidential administration and the church worsened significantly.
  • A year ago, Duterte announced that he wanted to rename the Philippines and make a federation.

Scientists found in amber a fragment of the wing of a prehistoric bird

A 10 cm toothy bird lived 99 million years ago
An international group led by a Chinese paleontologist in Myanmar found in amber a fragment of the wing of an ancient Cretaceous bird. This is written by the Clobal Times .

According to a team leader, a  paleontologist from Beijing,  Sin Lida, a fossilized fragment of a bird that lived about 99 million years ago was found in the Hukong Valley, located in the northern state of Myanmar. Amber was acquired by a Beijing collector in 2012 and transferred to Xing and a research team.

The length of the fragment preserved in amber is 5.3 cm, weight 79.5 grams, some bones of the right wing were preserved. Based on the characteristics of the bones, the Sin team ranked the bird as a group of enantiornites (this group had teeth) that inhabited the Cretaceous period.

The skin and feathers of the wing were also preserved, this will help scientists restore the color and pattern of the wing. It is noted that the bird has mainly dark brown feathers, lighter stripes and spots, which distinguishes it from other specimens found in the same area.

The longest feather is about 37 millimeters long, so the bird could be about 10 centimeters in size. This may indicate that the bird was a more mature individual compared to previous discoveries, or it could be larger enantiornites that had never been seen before.
  • Scientists at the University of Oregon found a bee sealed in amber: its age is estimated at 100 million years, that is, this individual lived in the Middle Cretaceous period. Older bees, modern science does not know yet,  reported  the press service of the university.

Indonesia erupts the most active volcano

Eruptions of the volcano Merapi regularly occur since 1548
This morning there was an eruption of Indonesia’s most active volcano Merapi on the island of Java. This is written by Xinhua .

A volcano with a height of 2,930 meters erupted a column of ash to a height of 2,000 meters.

Mount Merapi is located about 28 km north of the city of Yogyakarta with a population of 2.4 million people, thousands of people live on the slopes of the volcano.

Volcanologists warned that further bursts of activity could lead to the collapse of the lava dome, causing gliding along the slopes of pyroclastics (rock fragments) and other volcanic materials. In addition, lava can also affect areas located on a slope and in areas around the crater.

Volcanologists declared a restricted area within a three-kilometer radius of the crater and urged residents to take precautions regarding the possible risks associated with volcanic ash and the possible occurrence of pyroclastic clouds.

The eruptions of the volcano Merapi regularly occurred since 1548. A total of 353 people were killed, and about 350,000 people were forced to evacuate during the eruption of the volcano from October to November 2010.

Mount Merapi is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
